About Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania

Our History

The Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania was formed by volunteers in 1995 with the purpose of supporting research efforts to find a cure and provide support for those with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their families.

In 2000, the Foundation hired an executive director to expand patient services and public awareness.

The Parkinson Wellness Program was initiated in 2001, providing physical exercise, cognitive stimulation, and socialization, tailored to the needs of people with PD.

Since 2005, the Foundation has increased its involvement directly with patients and families through the 23-member Support Group network. In 2007, a young-onset support group was created to help those diagnosed with PD under the age of 50.

Today, the Foundation serves as the hub for information, programs, and connection for Parkinson’s patients and their loved ones.

What We Do

As the leading community resource for Parkinson's disease in Western Pennsylvania, we are committed to serving the Parkinson’s community with services, information, education and support. Each day we work towards fulfilling our mission with the help of our board of directors, staff, volunteers and donors.

As a provider of educational and wellness programs, the Foundation is a place where you can get moving, be inspired and become connected with others in a similar situation.

Knowledgeable and compassionate staff are here to point you in the right direction, should you need advice on therapeutic programs in your neighborhood; support groups, and resources for care partners. The Parkinson Foundation also acts as sounding board and referral source about innovative programs.

We are here to serve the Parkinson’s family by providing counsel, hands-on services, and leadership to community groups and allied health professionals so that they become “Parkinson’s-proficient”.

Who We Serve

There are approximately 10,000 to 12,000 people in Western PA currently living with PD. This number is increasing due to the aging population of the “baby boomer” generation.

Program coordination and leadership assistance is now provided for 23 regional support groups serving 850 families. Support groups have expanded from Western PA into Ohio, West Virginia and east to Altoona and State College Pennsylvania.

The Cahouet Center for Comprehensive Parkinson’s Care

The Cahouet Center for Comprehensive Parkinson’s Care is a partnership with Allegheny Health Network that was launched in 2016. It is a designed to help patients move seamlessly through the maze of services and systems to meet their specific medical, emotional and social needs. The Center helps to create patient-specific plans that enhance the circle of care necessary to manage a long-term chronic disease.

Research

The Foundation has played a vital role in encouraging the growth of regional PD research programs, facilities, and scientists through its interface with research institutions and support of research through research grants. Since its founding, the organization has paid directly or committed $750,000 to PD research. PFWPA also serves as a referral source to local clinical trials on various aspects of PD.
